The creation of a library and multimedia learning center in Shree Saraswati Higher Secondary School. The project, emphasizing peace and understanding through education, will help individuals in rural Nepal to overcome the challenges of extreme poverty and to secure basic needs with confidence. As schools are a common meeting place in Nepal society, the venue will serve as a learning and information center for all, helping to maintain community peace, stability and empowering citizens to bring about autonomous change.

Utilisant la bibliothèque et le centre multimédia.

Beneficiaries using the library and the multimedia learning center.

The library is in great shape, it is home to 2’500 volumes and 13 computers connected to the internet. More than 700 students from rural Syangja district directly benefit from it. The Skype facilities in all the computers makes it possible to communicate and be in touch with all the student volunteers who help improve the functioning of the library.

The objective was to develop a participatory approach with the local population to better understand the transmission of schistosomiasis, a waterborne disease, within the framework of a scientific research project on the mathematical modeling of disease transmission.

Three participatory workshops were organized in our three experimental sites in the country (one in the North, one in the Center, and one in the South-West) between February 2015 and May 2016. A total of around 30 inhabitants were enrolled for the participatory workshop in each village. Participants were chosen so as to represent all primary economic occupations (fishery, agriculture, cattle farming), ethnic groups, age classes (young, adults and elders), neighbourhoods and gender. The scientific understanding the disease was introduced to the participants through an oral presentation, supported by graphical illustrations of the transmission cycle. The participatory workshop were concluded by a public presentation during a closing ceremony in the presence of the villages’ traditional and administrative authorities including the departmental, provincial and regional representatives.
